PRESS RELEASE

Complaints to Nursing and Midwifery Council INCREASE whilst 'Strike Off's
DECREASE!

Cases referred by members of the Public - The figures given to Mrs. J.
Brooks, member of the NHS Reform Group by the NMC in December 2010 were:

2007 = 155 cases referred by public - outcome 1 Registrant struck off.
2008 = 242 cases referred by public - outcome 5 Registrants struck off.
2009 = 554 cases referred by public - outcome NO Registrants struck off.
2010 = 779 cases referred by public- outcome NO Registrants struck off.

Cases referred by members of the Public - The figures given to Mr. W.
Powell, member of the NHS Justice Group by the NMC in June 2011 were:

2007 = 202 cases referred by public - outcome 9 Registrants struck off.
2008 = 304 cases referred by public - outcome 2 Registrants struck off.
2009 = 469 cases referred by public - outcome 5 Registrants struck off.
2010 = 902 cases referred by public - outcome 4 Registrants struck off.

Cases referred by the Police - The figures given by the NMC in December
2010:

2007 - 308 cases referred by the Police
2008 - 489 cases referred by the Police
2009 - 478 cases referred by the Police
2010 - 818 [Jan - Oct]

Cases referred by the Police - The figures given by the NMC in June 2011

2007 - 413 cases referred by the Police - outcome 17 Registrants struck off.
2008 - 465 cases referred by the Police - outcome 27 Registrants struck off.
2009 - 395 cases referred by the Police - outcome 28 Registrants struck off.
2010 - 959 cases referred by the Police - outcome 17 Registrants struck off.

Cases referred by NHS Employers - The figures given by the NMC in June 2011

2007 - 782 referrals by employers with 183 strike offs
2008 - 888 referrals by employers with 184 strike offs
2009 - 989 referrals by employers with 166 strike offs
2010 - 1469 referrals by employers with 121 strike offs

No matter which way you look at the stats, complaints about nurses have
INCREASED, whilst 'Strike Off's' have DECREASED.

When asked why two (2) members of the public had been given conflicting
information, the Nursing and Midwifery Council wrote to Mrs. Brooks and said
"The reason the figures differ is that the information sent to you was based
on the date the complaint was received while the information sent to Mr.
Powell was based on the date of the hearing (this is the year when the
panels decisions were made to impose the sanctions = Striking off
orders/removed)." Although neither Mrs. Brooks nor Mr. Powell had made any
such defined reason for wanting to know about NMC 'Strike Off's.
